The cooler Baynesfield climate is ideal for growing avocados and the company has grown its avocado investment over the years and currently has 165ha of avocados under irrigation and intends to expand this to up to 300ha.
The Estate grows Lamb Hass, Hass, Edranol, Fuerte, Pinkerton and Ryan varieties. The planned expansion will be limited to Hass and Pinkerton varieties as the market demand for these varieties has proved greater.
All avocados are marketed internationally and nationally through Univeg. The fruit is packed by the Katope-Natal packhouse in Richmond in which the company is a shareholder.
